I was volunteering at the SF Marin Food bank and looking for a restaurant nearby for lunch.  When I saw that there was a lasagneria only a few blocks away, I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity to eat my favorite food.  Chef Massimo Di Sciullo has an impressive resume, but just a taste of his lasagna tells you that he has an amazing skill to balance textures with depth of flavor to create a masterpiece.

Hailing from the Abruzzo region, Chef Massimo brings authentic flavors and offers seven (yes, seven!) different lasagnas to contribute Marcella's menu.  The casual establishment is set up like a deli inside with a large deli case displaying cold trays of lasagnas; outside seating is also available. This isn't a fancy place - all of the food is served on paper plates and in paper cups, but they do give you real silverware.

- Lasagna Bianca - Each lasagna is served in a 14 oz portion with 6 layers of ultra-thin pasta.  I guess white lasagnas are unique to the Abruzzo region, and this one contained bits of pancetta, onions, bechamel, and parmigiano reggiano.  Mozzarrella tops the lasagna.  The pasta was so tender - clearly recognizable as being home made.  The blend of cheeses and bechamel with the salt from the pancetta - it's a taste of heaven! I savored every bite of creamy goodness - crispy on the bottom and edges, this lasagna is perfect!  I ate the entire thing. $11.50

It was such a great experience that I took a cold Abruzzo lasagna home.

- Lasagna Abruzzo - The house made Italian sausage blended well with the spicy tomato sauce.  This lasagna had such a different flavor, but was equally wonderful. $11.50

Gianfranco served us, and he was super-friendly.  He was kind enough to ask me whether I planned to cook the lasagna in a microwave or oven and gave me specific instructions to have the perfect cook time.

I only wish this place was open for longer hours or on the weekend - I would be here all of the time. If you're anywhere in the neighborhood during their business hours, you must try this place!
